Give the Gift of Connection

This year it’s easier than ever to give gifts that provide extra value because they are connected to other products and services. Amazon Echo and Google Home are both popular, but we thought you might enjoy seeing a list of our favorite connected products just in case you were looking to give the gift of connection this holiday season. So take a look below at these eleven connected products. The ‘product links’ go to Amazon.com or the company site. The iOS and Android links go to the respective App Store sites for more information on connected functionality. • Febreze Home Air Freshener A unique connected […]

Observations from the Election for IoT Marketers

Quite a number of articles have been written since the U.S. Presidential election (to be followed, no doubt, by many books) on communications strategies and lessons learned. Some provide excellent food for thought for tech industry marketers, especially those of us who spend our time thinking and writing about the Internet of Things. We were particularly intrigued by the recent Wall Street Journal column, “Trump’s Win Has Ad Agencies Rethink How They Collect Data, Recruit Staff.” Bottom line: Have marketers become out of touch with consumers? One of the article’s key takeaways was that many marketing programs are oriented toward […]

Why Are Smart Devices On Gift Lists But Not On Wish Lists?

Here’s an interesting bit of psychology to ponder. The IoT products shoppers are buying for others may not be the same tech products they would like others to buy for them. As we mentioned in our last post, according to a telephone survey of 1,000 US adults conducted by the CTA (Consumer Technology Association), here was the list of smart home devices shoppers they were planning to purchase for others: SMART HOME GIFT LISTS: 17% Smartwatch 15% Fitness tracker 11% Connected toy 10% Smart thermostat 10% VR headset 9%   Heart rate monitor 9%   Drone 8%   Home camera 6%   GPS sports watch 6%   […]

Emerging Tech Products Including Smart Home On More Holiday Gift Lists Than Ever Before

According to the CTA (Consumer Technology Association), about 68 percent of US consumers—or 170 million people—plan to buy technology gifts this holiday season. That’s a six percent increase over last year. What’s particularly interesting for us at Arrayent is that a record number of these consumers are planning to give new emerging technology products as gifts this year. Almost a quarter of the consumers in the CTA survey (24%) plan to buy smart home devices. Smart thermostats led this category at 10 percent, and digital assistant devices such as Amazon’s Echo or Google Home came in at six percent. Smart […]

US Department of Homeland Security Issues Principles for Securing the Internet of Things

On Tuesday Nov. 15, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a set of guidelines for developers, manufacturers, service providers, and industrial consumers of IoT devices, called “Strategic Principles for Securing the Internet of Things.” Noting, “the time to address IoT security is right now,” the document comes less than a month after a stunning reminder of the importance of IoT security: the Dyn attack, where hackers used thousands of internet-connected devices around the world to launch a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that caused Internet outages to major sites, including Twitter, Netflix and Paypal. The DHS said […]

Arrayent’s Take On Parks Associates’ CONNECTIONS EUROPE Conference

We just returned from the 11th-annual CONNECTIONS™ Europe conference held on November 2 & 3 in Amsterdam. This ever-popular Parks Associates event was themed: ‘Smart Home, IoT, and the Connected Consumer.’ The two-day conference featured keynotes and panel presentations on IoT strategies from industry leaders, including one of our own, Arrayent’s founder Shane Dyer, who spoke on a panel entitled: “Smart Home Solutions: Business Models Shifting to the Cloud,” moderated by Parks’ president, Stuart Sikes. The event was well attended by high-level executives from companies that ranged from the Fortune 500 to startups plus many venture capitalists. In our view, […]

The Tech Talent Gap Facing IoT Consumer Products Manufacturers.

IoT is a complicated space spanning the worlds of both product development and information technology (IT). IT spans many areas of technical expertise: embedded product design, app design, connectivity, cloud software, security, backend, dev/ops and many more. Adding connectivity to products has many implications across an organization. Companies need to link physical products with software and services, and that means cross-functional cooperation across IT, engineering, manufacturing, marketing, business intelligence/data analysis, sales and customer support departments. As manufacturers move beyond pilot projects towards deployments at scale, IoT takes on even greater meaning across an organization. As we’ve discussed in other blog posts, with […]

IOT VIEWPOINT: DDoS Attacks and IoT Security

Friday October 21st raised a three-alarm emergency for IoT security. The Distributed Denial of Service (DDos) attack on Dyn, an East Coast-based company that monitors and routes Internet traffic, brought down major Internet sites in the U.S. and U.K. for the better part of a day. It also put a spotlight on future threats that may loom for unsuspecting consumers with unprotected IoT devices. This particular attack used unsecure devices, such as IP-connected cameras with weak security policies, as tools to perform the attacks through malicious malware. Thankfully, to our knowledge, no Arrayent-enabled products have been impacted by this recent […]
